The Kitchen of Tomorrow is a display space in the larger Fūtour (Future Tour) 2025 presentation space on the campus of SC Johnson. For this project we created a touchscreen application that provided the visual support for a scripted presentation about how someone might prepare a meal in the future, with technology integrated into everything they do. We created an ostensibly futuristic cooktop that, in reality, consists of a 32" touch screen embedded in a granite countertop. The touch screen acted as the cooktop where a presenter, following a scripted presentation, could walk the audience through a scenario in the kitchen of the future.
The cooktop started with a black screen to match the look of the glossy, black granite countertop. A swipe of the finger slides away the black countertop revealing a menu of items. Several taps later, and they've made their way to the main cooking screen consisting of an on-screen recipe, and a cooking burner. The presenter turns up the burner by sliding the control to the right, and puts on a real pot. Turning up the burner also triggers an incoming phone call that, after several seconds, interrupts the presentation, which the presenter can then dismiss with a swipe.
Tapping on the photo of the finished recipe, changes it to a step-by-step video demonstrating the recipe. And, tapping the bottom of the screen brings up a menu with additional functionality, such as:
Lights — where the presenter can seemingly control the lighting levels in three different rooms of the home.
Comfort — similar to the lighting controls, this menu item displays sliders to alter temperature and humidity settings in various zones.
Watch — allows the presenter to view television programming from a variety of stations.
